Get Excited for Tree’via and Quiz Bowl

By Calvin Norman

With the summer starting to fade away and acorns ripening, there’s a unique aroma in the air that every forester can smell – national forestry-based trivia competitions!

The Quiz Bowl Planning Team has been hard at work making sure that this year’s Quiz Bowl at the 2023 SAF National Convention will be both fun and challenging for teams of students across the country! We encourage convention attendees to support their alma mater and all of the teams that are competing for the coveted Quiz Bowl Trophy!

Are You Ready to Compete? Register Today!

Currently there are 27 teams signed up representing colleges and universities from California to New England. You can see the competing teams here. Pictured (left) are the current reigning champs: University of Tennessee Knoxville!

If you are the advisor to a student chapter, you can sign your team up here. Hurry--there's only 5 spots left!

Registrations will be on a first-come basis and the maximum number of teams competing will be 32. Registration will close two weeks before the competition. Teams that register after the 32-team limit is reached will be waitlisted. The waitlist will be ordered by time of registration. During rollcall before the start of the competition, teams that fail to appear will be dropped, and a waitlisted team will be advanced into the competition.

New this Year: Second Round of Tree’via for Spectators!

There has been a major change to Tree’via this year! With interest from spectators last year, the Quiz Bowl Planning Team has decided to branch out—Tree’via will host a second round to all attendees who want to test their knowledge. The second round will begin at 8:30 p.m. after the first two bracket round
s are complete. Spectators are invited to stick around and cheer on the students competing from 8–8:30 p.m. before competing in their own rounds.

Participants of this new Tree’via spectator round are playing for more than just bragging rights—there is a spectator trophy on the line! This new trophy, designed and built by Quiz Bowl Planning Team, will be revealed ONLY at Tree’via! The winner of Tree’via will be able to take the trophy home and show off their DEEP knowledge of forestry on their desk or trophy case until the 2024 SAF National Convention!

The second round of Tree’via is just for fun and will not add to the scores or impact the ranking of the student competition.
