SAF Supports Legislation to Help Forest Landowners Recover After Natural Disasters

July 8, 2021

Along with the Forest Landowners Association (FLA) and many of our partner organizations, SAF praised the bipartisan Disaster Reforestation Act (H.R. 4210), sponsored by Reps. Terri Sewell (D-AL-07) and Buddy Carter (R-GA-01), which allows family and private timber growers to recover from the loss of timber destroyed by natural disasters and reforest their lands. SAF offered the following statement of support, which was included in an FLA press release:

“Natural disasters are an ever-present and growing threat to the long-term investments made by forest landowners—investments which benefit all Americans by contributing significantly to our economic wellbeing and providing valuable and necessary ecosystem services and products for rural and urban communities alike. SAF is proud to support the Disaster Reforestation Act, which calls for a common-sense and equitable revision to the tax code to help give forest landowners more certainty and incentivize keeping forests as forests.”

With FLA leading efforts on this legislation, SAF will continue to lend support and help raise awareness about this important issue. SAF members are encouraged to learn more and ask your representatives to support the Disaster Reforestation Act.
