THEMES & SUBTHEMES

Theme

Forestry: It's in Our DNA

Our 2023 theme is “Forestry: It’s in Our DNA,” referencing both the proud legacy and the ongoing challenges and opportunities we face. Forestry, and what it means to be a forester, is multi-faceted with many backgrounds, disciplines, and experiences shaping our profession's past, present, and future. The 2023 convention will bring together novel science and on-the-ground management applications, while focusing on how to better communicate to the public and tackle a changing climate.

Subthemes

Subthemes help bring in additional elements of the convention to the program, provide direction to selected speakers, and bring cohesion to the technical program.

Emerging Markets

The landscape for forest products continues to evolve. Expanding global trade, developing markets for carbon and other ecosystem services, new developments in construction materials, fuels management, and non-timber products are creating opportunities and challenges within forest management, policy, and utilization – how can we share these experiences?

Evolution of Forestry

Our discipline bridges societies and ecosystems in unique and ever-changing ways. As the goals, objectives, and needs of forest ecosystems expand, we see shifts and changes within the individuals, expertise, and methods. How can we learn from our past, embrace the present, and grow into the future?

Can We Burn Our Way Out of This?: Fire Challenges Across the Nation

The impact of wildfire and prescribed fire on our forests and communities is as diverse as our uses of, perspectives, communications, and responses to fire across the nation. What challenges and opportunities are you experiencing?

Ways of Knowing Forests & Forestry

There are many avenues of knowledge including Western science, traditional ecological knowledge, and local place-based knowledge. We highlight the many perspectives and experts facilitating increased cross-boundary work and land stewardship. What knowledge do you have to share about a forest ecosystem?

Sharing Our Passion

From going viral online, to recruiting new foresters, to sharing research, communication is key. With so many ways to be #forestproud, how do we harness communication tools to invite people into conversations about forestry?
