  • Hello Foresters! SAF District 5 states (Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin) are hosting a leadership academy on September 12-14 in Tomahawk, WI. As a partner state, we can send five people to attend this event. The goal of the leadership academy is to provide support and instruction to individuals that are interested in growing their skills as leaders. These types of events are also fantastic for networking, improving communication skills, and just enjoying the company of other foresters! Examples of topics to be covered include: an introduction to SAF National organization and the services they provide; recruitment and retention strategies; and diversity, equity, and inclusion discussions.

    At our spring Iowa SAF meeting it was decided that we would take open nominations for attendance to this leadership academy. If we get more nominations than we have spots, the Iowa SAF Executive Committee will use the criteria discussed at the meeting to pair down our nomination list to five. You do not need to be a member of Iowa SAF to attend - although we always encourage you to join and members will be given priority. Students and professionals are encouraged to attend. There is no fee to attend the leadership academy - lodging, registration, and food for attendees is covered by a Foresters Fund Grant. The only cost to participants would be your personal travel costs. Iowa SAF contributed $1125 to the Foresters Fund grant as a match to be included in this opportunity.

    I attended a leadership academy in 2014 and it was well worth my time. I really enjoyed meeting foresters from other states and getting to know the folks on the National team as well. Future leaders can expand your skills and bonus: being in central Wisconsin in September will be amazing!!!
