How does my academic program initiate accreditation?

When will my newly accredited degree program be listed on the SAF website?
The list of accredited degree programs on the SAF website is updated each year, usually in January.

STUDENTS:

Does SAF accredit associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree programs?
SAF accredits associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degree programs. However, because SAF accreditation concentrates on forest technology and first professional degree programs, only a few master’s degree programs in forestry—and no master’s of science or doctoral degree programs—are accredited.

What degree programs does SAF accredit?
SAF accredits degree programs under four different standards: forestry, urban forestry, forest technology, and natural resources and ecosystem management (NREM).

Does SAF accredit distance education degree programs?
SAF's accreditation criteria require laboratory and field experiences. These are difficult to achieve via remote learning environments. However, some SAF-accredited degree programs do offer portions of their curriculum online. Students are encouraged to contact each academic program for information about its delivery options.

Is there a difference between a BS and a BSF?
No. Institutions can give their degrees any name they choose. Contact the institution itself for more information about its degree titles and their distinctions.

Can SAF provide program or institution rankings?
Accreditation is not a ranking system. SAF does not rank programs in any way.

What is SAF's policy on transfer credits?
Policies on transfer credits and admissions are set by individual institutions, not by SAF. Questions related to these policies should be directed to the institution.
