Society of American Foresters Launches Forests250 Initiative
Commemorating 250 Years of America’s Forest Legacy
WASHINGTON, DC (March 26, 2026) — Today, the Society of American Foresters, in partnership with the National Forest Foundation and Arbor Day Foundation, proudly launches Forests250. Supported by the USDA Forest Service, this national campaign aims to engage and educate the public about forestry and natural resources for the America250 initiative. Forests250 supports the America250 theme of public engagement and highlights how forests advance the health and sustainability of our nation and communities through forest management, wood products, recreation opportunities, and wildfire risk reduction.
“As SAF celebrates 125 years of setting the standard for forest management, I am inspired by the Forests250 campaign,” said Society of American Foresters CEO Terry Baker. “This is a unique opportunity to amplify the efforts of all professionals and organizations in forestry and natural resources conservation. With support from our great partners at Arbor Day Foundation and the National Forest Foundation, Forests250 will define the future of our forests.”
“As the official national nonprofit partner of the USDA Forest Service, the National Forest Foundation is proud to invest in our nation’s national forests to ensure they are resilient and accessible for the next 250 years,” said National Forest Foundation President and CEO Dieter Fenkart-Froeschl.
"Teamwork is an essential part of creating a positive impact through trees. Initiatives like Forests250 bring people together to nurture healthy forests and communities, and the Arbor Day Foundation is proud to be part of this important work," said Arbor Day Foundation Chief Executive Dan Lambe.
"The story of these lands and the people that have lived and worked on these lands is an essential part of America’s history,” said Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz. “Taking a step back to look at the story of America’s forests, we see a record of resilience that has endured fire, change, and rejuvenation. Every new growth ring in a tree reminds us that the future is dynamic and continues to be written."
Forests250 celebrates the rich history of our nation’s forests and grasslands, honors the partners and communities who care for them, and encourages volunteerism, outdoor engagement, and storytelling. By promoting education, fostering community involvement, and supporting sustainable management, Forests250 helps ensure healthy forests for generations to come.
All are invited to volunteer, share their stories, and join others committed to caring for our forests. Together, we can shape the next 250 years. Visit www.forests250.org to learn how you can make a difference.
