Overview

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) and the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) have a long-standing partnership focused on supporting the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program and its growing stakeholder community. Every year, SAF and NCASI convene in person and virtual forums to bring together FIA leaders and stakeholders to foster two-way learning and improve alignment of user needs and agency resources.

Latest Progress Report

This report reviews recommendations made at the FIA National User Group Meetings from 2015-2023. Written by Renate Bush, FIA National Program Lead.

New Learning Opportunities

SAF and NCASI host a variety of opportunities throughout the year, so that stakeholders have multiple forums to share their experiences, learn about new resources, and connect with the broader FIA stakeholder community.

Tech Transfer Sessions

Based on recommendations from users, SAF convenes quarterly tech transfer sessions to help users better understand how to get the most from FIA tools and resources. Each two-hour session offers users an interactive experience with a variety of experts as they walk us through key platforms, dashboards, and other products. As an open forum, users are encouraged to bring and share questions and tips. Please save the dates and help spread the word for the sessions described below. Registration will open approximately one month before the session date.

FIA One-click State Fact Sheets: These newly released fact sheets pack a lot of information about forest statistics for a state into two sheets and are citable.
Get a sneak peek from speakers Ted Ridley and Chris Oswalt at the newly released (or soon-to-be released) FIA One-Click State Snapshot. While keeping some of the old metrics from the former One-Click State Factsheets, a cross-station team expanded the former one-pager into a two-pager covering additional metrics such as forest composition, carbon, along with other forest metrics, into digestible data visualizations for each state. The factsheets are automated, so FIA will be able to swiftly update nationally consistent information for every state as new data becomes available in FIA EVALIDator. Factsheets for previous years will be archived in Treesearch as published Resource Updates.

How to Use EVALIDator and FIADB-API: The FIA program collects and maintains authoritative forest data at a national scale. The FIADB-API and EVALIDator web interface enable users to draw upon these data to generate statistically valid estimates with measures of uncertainty for a broad variety of forest metrics. This presentation introduced attendees to the FIADB-API and EVALIDator and demonstrated various methods for generating customized estimates both via the web interface and programmatically. Recording and report with key resources, contacts, and stats linked below. Recorded August 2023.

Accessing timber products production data through NRUM’s ToolKit: Introducing two data access tools available within the National Resource Use Monitoring (NRUM) Toolkit available HERE. In this session, James Bentley will cover the Interactive reporting tool and Data download tool. Presenter will show the range of data available, including data limitations, ways to access and display information, and provide examples for application.

Accessing Results from the National Woodland Owner Survey (NWOS): Have you ever asked yourself: who owns the forests in my state? The results from the NWOS can help you answer that question. This session will provide an overview of NWOS products with a focus on the online NWOS dashboard. Participants will learn how to access results from the NWOS including general ownership patterns and information on the attitudes and behaviors of family forest owners and other private ownership groups. Recorded November 2023.

FIA Land Resources Explorer
FIA’s sample network includes plots across all land use and land cover classes. The Land Resources Explorer provides access to both: 1) plot-based estimates of land use distribution at multiple scales; and 2) high-resolution maps of cover and use types as well as disturbance and regrowth going back to the 1980s. This presentation will familiarize users with query capabilities to generate and save Land Resources Explorer outputs for their own areas of interest.
Speakers include Sean Healey, Zhiqiang Yang, Jennifer Lecker, Joshua Heyer, Ian Housman, Kevin Megown
