Meet the Fund Series: The Kurt Gottschalk Science Fund
SAF's Meet the Fund Series highlights the powerful impact
SAF funds have on people, SAF units, and communities. Giving to SAF ensures
that we can maintain and develop new programming for all served by our
organization.

The Kurt Gottschalk Science Fund provides grant funding for projects that
transfer information and science-informed management practices to foresters and
other natural resource professionals. It also supports recognition of research
being conducted by graduate students in forestry and natural resources, as well
as continuing education activities for professionals and the public that
further facilitate science-informed management.
In 2023 $10,780 in Kurt Gottschalk Science fund dollars were
awarded. The Science Fund supported
the following:
- Reduced student registration costs and provided travel scholarships for the 14th North American Forests Soils Conference: Managing Forest Soils Systems.
- Supported the SC Young Professionals Summit, a professional development and continuing education opportunity for leaders in the south working the forestry industry.
- Funded student research assessing plant biodiversity and migration in the Hobcaw Barony coastal forest area of South Carolina and examining the impacts of urban tree canopy structure and condition on adult depression in Georgia.
The Kurt Gottschalk Science Fund allows SAF to forward our
mission by supporting science, technology, and education to advance sustainable
forest management. Don’t forget, you
can support the Kurt Gottschalk Fund at SAF23 Convention by donating to or
participating in the Silent Auction. All funds raised from the annual
Silent Auction are equally split between the Kurt Gottschalk Science Fund and
Foresters’ Fund. Learn more about the Silent Auction here.
